| The Iberian Peninsula is in the the south west corner of Europe and has the countries of Spain and Portugal. The small country of Andorra and the British colony of Gibraltar are also in Iberia.
It is almost surrounded by sea including the Bay of Biscay, the Atlantic ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Cantabrian Sea. The land border with France is the high Pyrenees mountains or the coastal plains.
The respective governments founded the Paradores of Spain in 1910 and the Pousadas of Portugal in 1942 to preserve their national heritage by using historic buildings as quality castle hotels. Some private companies are also listed which use former palaces etc. as hotels.
Many of the buildings were inhabited by kings, governors or, in the days that the church had great wealth, by bishops and monks.
